Luther star Idris Elba embraces those James Bond rumours
Speculation over who will take over the iconic role of James Bond when current incarnation Daniel Craig hangs up his licence to kill has been rife virtually since he first took on the role.
One of the names which has been mentioned more than most is Idris Elba and the Luther star has decided to mercilessly tease fans by posting a very Bond-y tweet.
This morning (August 12), Elba decided to share a stylised cartoon-like image of himself looking into the camera and captioned it: “My name’s Elba, Idris Elba.”
Naturally, his followers were soon scrambling for answers as to what his words could possibly mean:
Sadly he wasn’t giving anything else away, so the speculation may be set to run and run for the time being.
The actor has previously claimed that he’s sick of hearing all the rumours about the chances of him becoming 007, explaining that he hates the focus on his race.
“It’s interesting that the James Bond thing continues to go,” he said. “I think it’s more about, we just want to have a black guy play James Bond rather than Idris Elba, the actor, play James Bond. That’s the part that I’m like, ‘Ugh, come on’.”
And he’s also said that he reckons nobody wants the role , as other actors such as Tom Hiddleston have also ruled themselves out of taking on the part .
This isn’t the first time Elba’s been mentioned in relation to the Bond role this week though, as director Antoine Fuqua recently denied that he pitched Idris Elba for the Bond role to James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli after reports started stating that he had done so.
“He never had a conversation with Barbara about the franchise or about any casting,” a spokesperson for Fuqua later clarified. “It’s all made up stuff. Not sure how it got started.”
